Formerly known as the California Biennial, OCMA has re-envisioned this important survey of contemporary California art and will re-launch it as the California-Pacific Triennial in 2013 with participating artists representing a cross-section of countries from throughout the Pacific rim. California’s geographical position on the Pacific Ocean has enriched its cultural prominence. The demographics of the state are strongly linked to the diverse countries throughout the Pacific rim, which are increasingly producing some of the most innovative art today. Despite the phenomenal economic and cultural growth of Asian and Latin American countries that border the Pacific, and California's proximity to these developments, there is no ongoing exhibition on the West Coast that regularly explores this activity. With national boundaries becoming more porous and artistic connections happening between artists and viewers from a broad range of cultural backgrounds, the flow of ideas and images crisscrossing the planet becomes a crucial component of any contemporary art survey. The California-Pacific Triennial will place artists working in California within this broader global network, one that is particularly relevant to our region, and that will offer visitors their only opportunity to engage in a more cosmopolitan conversation about contemporary art.

Originally known as Brush Canyon, located in southern Griffith Park, it was developed by the Union Rock Company in 1907, as the Union Brick Quarry. The granite was first removed by truck, but the neighbors objected to the truck traffic, and a rail line was installed. This line ran through the main chamber of the cave to the street below, and ran during restricted hours in the morning and evening. The main cave and its two tributaries were drilled through the mountain to expedite the removal of granite from the back portion of the quarry.

The first cinematic appearance of the caves was the National Pictures serial Lightning Bryce, starring Jack Hoxie and Ann Little. Made in 1919, this Western adventure was directed by Paul C. Hurst, who also costarred as the villain, 'Powder Solvang.' It is open to speculation whether the method of ore removal (truck vs. rail) is the reason for the first appearance of the quarry in this early film. It is possible that Union Rock rented the facility to National Pictures during its conversion from rail to truck in 1918, as a means of supplementing their income during the quarry downtime. The rail tracks and trains in the quarry itself remained, and are evident in the serial.

Taking place in the 1919 Old West, Lightning Bryce could almost be classified as a horror Western. With an all-star horror cast of Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Melvin Douglas, and Dwight Frye, this crude yet atmospheric thriller was shot on the sets of the Frankenstein village and castle at Universal. Dwight Frye, once again playing a lunatic, Herman Gleib, whose nocturnal bat-keeping antics earn him the number one murder suspect moniker, is chased down by the torch wielding vigilante villagers. They corner him in Bronson Caves, which becomes an interior set that does not resemble the interior of the caves. It should be noted that Ira Morgan's eerie photography of the exterior/interior of the cave adds greatly to the Universal Gothic feel of this Majestic feature.

Morgan had a long career at Columbia Pictures in the 40's in Sam Katzman's serial unit. The Monkey's Paw features stunning night-for-night photography by second unit cinematographer Jack Mackenzie. The Sunday and daily appearances of these cartoon features were a sure sell at the box office. Flash Gordon premiered on Sunday, January 7, 1934, in Hearst newspapers throughout the country. Distributed by King Features, Flash Gordon was created by Alex Raymond, a former Wall Street brokerage clerk turned cartoonist. Raymond simultaneously created Jungle Jim to serve as an introduction piece to the new science fiction cartoon. Flash and Jim were created as competition for early favorites Buck Rogers (created in 1929) and Tarzan (created in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs). In an ironic twist of fate, Johnny Weismuller, who originated the role of Tarzan in the Talkies in 1931 for MGM, ended up playing Jungle Jim for 'Jungle Sam' Katzman and Columbia's "B" picture unit.

The Jungle Jim feature Mark of the Gorilla and several other features make use of Bronson Canyon. The Gocko was the first of these Herculean terrors to be encountered by Flash. Played by Glenn Strange, this monster was aided by wire riggings hooked into the ceiling of the caverns. The plot is simple 50's paranoic fare. The hero and heroine are confronted by their hometown friends and family who cultivate pods from another world. These pods are placed next to the sleeping townsfolk, and produce an exact replica of that person. Once the soul integrates with this alien horticulture, the zombie-like subject becomes free of all material strife, and is in a state of blissful euphoria produced from

their new-found plantlike immortality. Fleeing the townsfolk, the two heroes, Miles Bennell -aptly played by Kevin McCarthy - and his former sweetheart Becky Driscoll - sensually played by Dana Wynter - take refuge in a mine shaft (Bronson Caves), complete with a secret crawl space specially dug into the cave floor, covered over with a board walkway. The two struggle to stay awake, after being awake for several days. They hide beneath the false cave floor as the townspeople thunder over them.

The photography of Ellsworth Fredericks, ASC, makes this entire series of scenes horrific. Especially effective is the low angle photography of the two protagonists, soaking wet, trying to keep still as the townsfolk run across the planks merely inches above their heads. After the townsfolk have gone, hearing music the hero goes to check out the Canyon, and the heroine falls asleep. When he returns, he is unaware that she has slipped into slumber and has been possessed. Frederick's intense camera work conveys Kevin McCarthy's reaction of terror, as sweat and mud-soaked schizophrenia, as McCarthy rants and raves to his heroine Wynters, who has been taken over by her pod double.

Fredericks' camera conveys, through a series of low-angle shots, the paranoia of a love lost in a matter of minutes. McCarthy's character runs hysterically into the midst of a traffic jam. line-height: 22px; font-family:Courier, fantasy;">The Bronson Caves are located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park and are famous as a stage set to countless moition pictures and television shows. The caves are actually man made and were originally a rock quarry during the early 1900s used to lay streets for an expanding Los Angeles. A hundred years of filmmaking has occurred at the caves imaging events from explosions and gun fights to the discovery of cave paintings. Reflecting on this history, the caves are documented on various formats and film stocks over time as an unchanging landscape amidst a chaotic specter of fictional realities.

In the series of photographs titled Bronson Caves, the caves served as a stage set yet again. I performed actions for the camera with massive sheets of colored paper. Since a long-exposure photograph was produced rather than a motion picture, the papers were recorded as voluminous, glowing colors. The materiality of the rainbowed forms, emerging from the mouth of the cave, dancing about the canyon, and bubbling up from the ground, are based solely in the photographic process, and can only be experienced when viewing the final photographic prints. If a visitor to the caves were to accidently stumble upon my performance they would only see a mass of crumbled colored paper draped awkwardly over a man moving/dancing to a camera positioned on a tripod. The goal of these performances was to create sculptural, photographic objects that interacted with the history and architecture of the caves.

The colored paper used during the production of the cave photographs was transformed, weathered, stained, and torn after months of constant use. Deciding to isolate the medium, the props of the action, a studio setting with a pedestal was used to photograph the various scraps of paper. The format of these photographs mimics the traditional way of documenting art objects. However, a photographic technique similar to that explored at the caves was used, exposing the paper into a blurred mass, a pure photographic object. The final phase of the series involved setting the paper ablaze, letting the objects pass in transience but allowing them to persist in photographs.
NAME: BRICE BISCHOFFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01179994894362473637noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712145534089689466.post-31110866145337918842010-04-22T13:10:00.000-07:002010-04-22T13:52:23.287-07:00Brancusi's Photograph of LES FILS PRODIGUEAround 1907 Brancusi began to take photographs of his sculptures. The photographs he produced were usually out of focus, over or underexposed, scratched, or spotty. However, Brancusi insisted that the photographs he took of his sculptures were the only photographs to truly represent his work. For me these photographs place the sculptures in a different realm, a realm that can only exist within the medium of photography. NAME: BRICE BISCHOFFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01179994894362473637noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712145534089689466.post-31194037240774196892009-08-01T17:47:00.000-07:002009-08-01T21:54:57.768-07:00The Kinks Take On Photographic Theory

Photographic theory and rock and roll don’t mix often if at all, however I cannot think of a more complex, smart combination than The Kinks last track on The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, “People Take Pictures of Each Other.” Here Ray Davies, the Kinks lead singer and lyrical author, offers us a desperate view of how photographs function against a peppy vaudeville piano vamp.

Davies sings:

People take pictures of the Summer,
Just in case someone thought they had missed it,
And to prove that it really existed.

Here the photograph acts as evidence recording the transitory existence of a season. And what if someone missed summer? Well I could show them a photograph of it as Davies suggests, but what would be represented in that photograph? The photograph could show a sunny beach bordered with palm trees, that whole scene. However, the beach photographed would not be your summer or anyone’s summer in fact. The photograph is generic, ambiguous and even though it describes it doesn’t describe anything specific to you. And this is one of the points Davies reveals about the medium of photography: the reality a photograph describes is subjective based on who is looking at it. Even though this argument could apply to other mediums of art, it is particularly shocking given the faithful mechanical objectivity a camera should produce.

The song goes on:

People take pictures of each other,
Just to prove that they really existed,
Just to prove that they really existed.

Davies sings this lyric ironically since he does not believe photographs prove anything except loss. However, the lyric does present a complex answer to why we photograph anything at all. I believe the key word in Davies hypothesis is existed. He does not say, “Just to prove that they really are existing.” In this argument what is photographed is now dead; photograph as death mask. The existing becomes the existed and the photograph is the proof.

Ray Davies, Age 8 with his Mother, Sister, and Brother, 1952

The overarching theme of the The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society as a concept album describes in nostalgic terms the ambiguous allure of the past, how it can never be experienced again because we are alive and time goes by. This is why Davies cries, “ Don’t show me no more please,” regarding photographs at the end of “People Take Pictures Of Each Other.” To Davies photographs are a poor substitute for the real thing. Take the photograph Davies describes in the song: he is three years old and he is standing with his mother by an old oak tree. This specific event would have lived and died within that moment, but since there is a photograph the event continues. The moment is still dead but the photograph reminds Davies that this event with his mother happened but cannot be relived. A similar thing happens in Camera Lucida when Roland Barthes discovers the "Winter Garden Photograph," which portrays his mother standing in a garden when she was five years old. Given that his mother had recently died the photograph pricks him with a unique loss and deep pain which he concludes all he can do now is await his own “total, undialectical death.” To Barthes and Davies these photographs of their mothers contain the power to move and affect; the medium at its height. However, as Barthes explains if we were to view the same photographs we would feel absolutely nothing.

NAME: BRICE BISCHOFFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01179994894362473637noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712145534089689466.post-60031692764455610572009-05-26T23:29:00.000-07:002009-05-27T00:05:31.918-07:00A Photograph of Morris Louis in His StudioDoesn’t exist.

Locked away in his home studio Louis perfected painting techniques that are still being speculated by art historians over 40 years later. Why? Because he kept his techniques guarded by not sharing how he made his paintings with anyone.

…no one ever saw him work. Not even his wife was admitted to the tiny studio where Louis worked his magic, and the huge canvases that emerged were canonized as masterpieces of this intimate alchemical process.
(Machine in the Studio, Caroline A. Jones)
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_G9WLg6F-dmc/ShzlnWnDyyI/AAAAAAAAAgs/99RtZVx8d_s/s200/450weck-110207-Point-of-Tranqu.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340395722401631010" />
So what we are left with is the object, these masterpieces. However, to stand in front of one of Louis’ paintings, to witness the threads of bare canvas, the shift in colors stained through the fabric, and to peek around at the limits of the support, reveals nothing of the creator’s hand. Not a single brush stroke can be seen. It is as if the painting was always present. Greenberg describes this experience, “The fabric, being soaked in paint rather than merely covered by it, becomes paint in itself, color in itself, like dyed cloth: the threadedness and wovenness are in the color.” Because of Morris’ strict work ethic and artistic morality, he never let a photographer near his studio. With no document in existence we are left imagining him pouring, dabbing, mixing, stretching; a mystic figure working, locked away from the public.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_G9WLg6F-dmc/Shzkm6i9dyI/AAAAAAAAAgk/T1v_lPp4-0U/s200/pollock+1+(converti).gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340394615356618530" />
What adds further substance to Morris’ integrity is that every other major painter of his generation and the generation before him has a photograph taken of them working in their studio. These photographs of painters, more typologies than portraits, are so common during this period that they all share specific characteristics. All the photographs contain the painter residing in their studio, their recent creations surrounding them. The painter doesn’t acknowledge the camera spying on them as they work. However, the painter is absorbed either in thoughtful contemplation or the act of painting. The presence of the camera changes everything as I have learned, and the person being photographed in this situation becomes a performer in a role. The role in this case is that of an artist working in their studio. The theatricality of these types of photographs stifles the artistic intensions these painters explored, and predate the “stage presence” of minimalist art by decades. But unlike minimalism it is not the art object that is on a theatrical stage, it is the artist, and the photograph remains allowing us to witness the drama unfolding, the artist creating in their studio.

Upper right: Morris Louis, Point of Tranquility, 1959-60

Lower right: Hans Namuth, Jackson Pollock, 1951
NAME: BRICE BISCHOFFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01179994894362473637noreply@blogger.com4
